Steps that fight the house
Concrete moves with temperature and moisture. If a slab is poured tight against another slab, a step or a foundation, it has nowhere to move, so it cracks. Isolation joints exist for this reason: they keep driveways and patios apart from steps, garage slabs and other fixed points so that each piece can move on its own.
Book the introduction first.
When you talk to a contractor, ask where the joints will go, what material fills them, and whether the new steps will be separated from the porch and the walk. If the answer sounds vague, ask again. A step with no joint at the house is likely to be a step that cracks.
Ask who decides before you book.
Ask, too, whether the contractor would rebuild the step or lift and reset it, and what they saw that led to the answer. A sound step on a failed base may need only the base fixed, while a cracked, scaled step may be past saving.
