Salt is in the town's name, but not on your slab from 1797
Onondaga County's 2025 hazard mitigation plan records that the Town of Salina received its name in 1797, when the Surveyor General was given authority to set aside a portion of the Salt Reservation for use in salt manufacturing. The Salt Reservation had been created by treaty and extended one mile around Onondaga Lake. The Village of Salina was chartered in 1798.

The Town of Salina, which contains Liverpool village, Mattydale, Galeville and Lyncourt, reports 16,016 housing units with a median year built of 1960. 14.5 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, 24.3 percent before 1950 and 77.0 percent before 1980. Within the town, Lyncourt is 39.5 percent pre-1950 and Mattydale 37.2 percent, while Galeville is 21.4 percent pre-1950 but 89.7 percent pre-1980.

NRMCA's written advice is that when conditions permit, homeowners should hose off the accumulation of salt deposited by cars on driveways and garage slabs. It adds that poor drainage causing salt solutions to accumulate on concrete surfaces increases the severity of the exposure and may cause scaling.

NRMCA's stated rule is to avoid the use of de-icing chemicals in the first winter and subsequently to use them in moderate amounts. Its detailed guidance is to avoid de-icing chemicals on newly placed concrete if possible and to use clean sand for traction instead, and it warns that excessive applications increase the potential for scaling. NRMCA states that de-icing chemicals composed of calcium chloride and sodium chloride, which is rock salt, are considered acceptable for concrete, and that ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate and magnesium-based salts should never be used as a de-icer because they are chemically aggressive and destroy concrete surfaces. It notes specifically that magnesium-based salts are used for pre-snow de-icing of roads and can be tracked by cars and accumulate on concrete surfaces.

In Onondaga County's 2025 multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan, the local planning team for the Town of Salina determined that the town does not have unique vulnerabilities and impacts to winter weather, which the plan defines as blizzards, heavy snow, ice storms, cold wave and extreme cold and nor'easters, and that the jurisdiction's vulnerability and impacts are instead consistent with those experienced throughout the county. The team reached the same conclusion for severe weather. It did record that winter weather vulnerability and impact are expected to increase in future.

Where the salt on a Salina slab actually comes from
The county's own hazard mitigation plan records that Salina took its name in 1797, when part of the Salt Reservation around Onondaga Lake was set aside for salt manufacturing, and that history gets blamed for a lot of ruined concrete in this town. It is the wrong culprit. The chloride doing the damage arrived off the road this winter, on tires, which is why the trade body's own advice to homeowners is to hose the salt accumulation off drives and garage slabs when conditions allow, and why it warns that poor drainage letting salt solutions stand on a slab makes the exposure worse. That gives you four levers rather than none: where the water goes, rinsing after a thaw, sand instead of de-icer through a new slab's first winter, and what the next pour is specified for. Nobody in this town needs to accept that the concrete is doomed by geology.
