Solvay slab leveling

Uneven Concrete in Solvay: One Slab Up, One Slab Down

One slab at your Solvay house sits higher than its neighbor, and the edge between them catches shoes and shovels. Tell us where the step is, and you will know which questions about water matter before anyone lifts anything.

Slab leveling booked through Solvay introductions carries $100 off your first job, limited to a single credit for each address.

This fits when

Signs it is time for slab leveling work

  1. A ridge where two slabs meet

A lip at a joint means the slabs are no longer moving together. Measure it with a ruler, and measure again after the next thaw.

  2. The drive tilts toward the house

When a slab leans toward the foundation, water follows it. This is the version of the problem to describe first.

  3. The driveway dips where a pipe crosses

Over a buried pipe or beside a ditch crossing, the ground can heave and settle unevenly. Say so if your drive crosses a ditch.

  4. The sunken part is the newest part

A slab added later, such as a widened drive or a new walk, can drop beside the older concrete. Mention which piece came first.

Questions

Before you book slab leveling work in Solvay

  1. Why is one slab higher than the next in Solvay?

Frost and water move the ground unevenly. When one slab rises or sinks and the next does not, the joint between them shows it. A contractor needs to see yours.

  2. Can a clogged culvert make my drive sink?

It can contribute. NYSDOT points to blocked or missing culverts that dam a ditch beside a driveway as a source of uneven heave. Tell the contractor if your drive crosses a ditch.

  3. Who do I ask about a sunken slab at the street?

Start with the village code office. Almost all road in Solvay is village street, with a little state road.

Freshly poured concrete slab with a broom-finish surface and a cut joint, bare soil around its edge.

It is the uneven part that does the damage

Even heave is rarely destructive, in NYSDOT's words, because the whole surface rises and settles together. The trouble starts where heave is uneven: over a culvert pipe, for instance, or beside a driveway whose clogged or absent culvert dams the ditch. One corner that behaves differently from its neighbors is worse than a slab that moves as one.

Put the mix in writing.

That is why the shape of the problem matters. Tell the contractor whether the whole drive moved or only one slab, and whether anything runs beneath it.

Ask what is under the slab

A sunken slab is a symptom. The cause may be soil that washed out, soil that froze unevenly, or water with nowhere to go. A lift that ignores the cause is likely to be a short answer. Ask the contractor to describe what the ground looked like where the slab sat, not only how they would raise it.

Start with the street and the slab.

Ask the contractor what they found, why they think the slab dropped and what will keep it from dropping again. Method and cost are theirs to explain, not ours, so ask two or three for a comparison, and ask each to put the cause, the plan and the water fix in writing.

If the answer includes drainage, good. Water is the one thing in this story you can change, since the cold is not up to anyone.

Check whose job it is.

The thaw is the risky stretch. The ground thaws from the top while the layers beneath stay frozen, so meltwater has nowhere to go and the soil turns soft. Note whether yours moved in that stretch, and tell the contractor. Ask also whether the repair will include a way for that water to leave next spring.

Village streets, village questions

Solvay's 25.0 miles of road include none that the county owns, by the 2017 state report. If the slab in question is at the curb, at the street end of the apron or the walk, the village or the state is the office to ask. The village code office is the first call.

If you are unsure where your property line sits, say so. A contractor should be able to tell you what is yours to lift, and what to leave to the owner of the street.
