A 1972 median, and the layout rules to measure against
The Town of Manlius reports 14,524 housing units with a median year built of 1972. 11.2 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, 14.8 percent before 1950 and 61.7 percent before 1980. Manlius village itself is younger in profile than the town, with a median year built of 1968, only 10.5 percent built in 1939 or earlier and 12.5 percent before 1950, but 80.1 percent before 1980. Minoa village, also in the town, reports a median of 1971.

NRMCA's recommended practice is that maximum joint spacing should be 24 to 36 times the thickness of the slab, which for a 4 inch slab is about 10 feet, and that joint spacing should in any case be limited to a maximum of 15 feet. All panels should be square or nearly square, the length should not exceed 1.5 times the width, and L-shaped panels should be avoided. It describes joints as pre-planned cracks and notes that cracking cannot be prevented entirely, only controlled. NRMCA separately states that isolation or expansion joints separate driveways and patios from sidewalks, garage slabs, stairs, light poles and other points of restraint, permitting independent movement.

What the joints on a Manlius drive already tell you
Joints are pre-planned cracks, and their spacing is checkable on your own driveway in about two minutes. The recommended maximum is 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, roughly every ten feet on a four inch slab and never more than fifteen, with panels square or close to it and no L-shapes wrapped around a garage corner. Manlius runs a median build year of 1972, with the village at 1968 and 80.1 percent of it pre-1980, which is the one vintage where the original work can still be judged rather than assumed. If the panels are too long or the wrong shape, the cracking has an explanation and it is not the concrete.
Repair or replace, decided with a tape
Measure the panels before you accept a replacement quote. A drive that cracked because a bay was eighteen feet long or wrapped an L around the garage corner would have cracked whatever was in the truck, and a sound slab with an explainable crack is not automatically a slab to tear out. Where the panels were laid out properly and it still failed, that is a different finding and it points at the mix or the exposure.

This vintage can be judged, not guessed

How do I check the joint spacing on my Manlius driveway myself?
Measure between the tooled or sawn lines. On a typical four inch residential slab they should fall around every ten feet and never more than fifteen, and each panel should be square or close to it, no longer than one and a half times its width. Anything longer, thinner or L-shaped around the garage corner was always going to crack, and that is worth knowing before you agree to replace a slab that is otherwise sound.
The cracks follow the joints on my drive. Is that a failure?

What matters is cracking that ignores the joints and runs across a panel, or cracking that starts at a joint on an older slab and works outward, which is a different and more serious finding.
