Joints are pre-planned cracks, and on a patio or a long front walk they are the difference between a surface that ages tidily and one that maps its own failures. The practice is joints at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, about every ten feet on a four inch slab and never more than fifteen, on panels that are square or close to it, no longer than one and a half times their width, and never L-shaped. With a 1972 median in the town, 1968 in Manlius village and 1971 in Minoa, plenty of the flatwork here is from an era when wide unbroken slabs were poured freely, and it shows.
Where a Manlius walk or patio will crack next
Before replacing a cracked patio, measure it. A bay longer than fifteen feet, a long thin run down the side of a house or an L-shape wrapped around a corner was always going to break, whatever came out of the truck, and that is a layout finding rather than a materials one. It also means a rebuild that repeats the original layout repeats the original crack, which is the most avoidable way to spend money on this kind of work.
Square panels, ten feet, fifteen absolute
Maximum spacing is 24 to 36 times the slab thickness. Keep panels square or nearly so, no longer than one and a half times their width, and avoid L-shapes entirely.
Cracking is directed, never prevented
Concrete cracks. The layout decides whether it happens in a tooled line where nobody notices or across the middle of the seating area.
A 1972 town, judged on its merits
Manlius runs a 1972 median with the village at 1968 and 80.1 percent pre-1980, which is recent enough that the original layout can be assessed rather than assumed.
Joint spacing rules, and the era Manlius was built in
The Town of Manlius reports 14,524 housing units with a median year built of 1972. 11.2 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, 14.8 percent before 1950 and 61.7 percent before 1980. Manlius village itself is younger in profile than the town, with a median year built of 1968, only 10.5 percent built in 1939 or earlier and 12.5 percent before 1950, but 80.1 percent before 1980. Minoa village, also in the town, reports a median of 1971.

NRMCA's recommended practice is that maximum joint spacing should be 24 to 36 times the thickness of the slab, which for a 4 inch slab is about 10 feet, and that joint spacing should in any case be limited to a maximum of 15 feet. All panels should be square or nearly square, the length should not exceed 1.5 times the width, and L-shaped panels should be avoided. It describes joints as pre-planned cracks and notes that cracking cannot be prevented entirely, only controlled. NRMCA separately states that isolation or expansion joints separate driveways and patios from sidewalks, garage slabs, stairs, light poles and other points of restraint, permitting independent movement.

My Manlius patio cracked straight across the middle. Was the concrete bad?
Not necessarily. Measure the panel first. If the bay runs longer than fifteen feet, or is much longer than it is wide, or wraps an L around a corner of the house, it was going to crack whatever the mix was. That is a layout problem, and the useful thing about it is that a rebuild with a proper joint pattern does not repeat it.
Can joints be cut into an existing walk to stop it cracking further?
Sometimes, and it depends where the existing cracking has already taken over. Once a slab has cracked, those cracks are doing the job the joints should have done, so cutting new ones may add little. Where a run is still sound but badly laid out, adding joints at the right spacing can be worth doing, and we will tell you honestly which case you are in.
