Why air in the mix decides how long a drive lasts
Tiny air bubbles, billions to the cubic foot, are mixed into good exterior concrete on purpose. When water in the slab freezes and expands, it has somewhere to go instead of cracking the paste around it. Properly entrained air runs about 4 to 7 percent of the volume. A repair or replacement that leaves it out is a copy of the failure you are trying to fix.
Ask who decides before you book.
So ask the contractor for air-entrained concrete by name, and ask what figure they are ordering. Then ask who adds water on site. Extra water makes pouring easier and the surface weaker.
You can check your own drive. Press a coin edge into a flaked spot and see how far the loss goes. If you can feel bare stone, say so when you describe the problem.

A fall pour has a clock on it
New concrete stays vulnerable until it has gained strength, and one freeze during that stretch can damage it. The cold-weather guide treats a pour as a cold-weather pour once lows are expected at or below 40 degrees, and it cautions against water curing in the cold.
If your job slips from early fall into November, ask what changes. A good contractor will name the cover, the heat or the delay they would use, and will put the plan in writing next to the mix.
An old village, and who to ask before you sign
By Census estimate, 54 percent of East Syracuse homes date to 1939 or before, and nearly 90 percent to before 1980. So much original concrete often raises an ownership question before a slab question.
