Why pre-war treads lose their surface first
Look at the nosing of an original village step and you can usually see the whole story. Entrained air gives freezing water microscopic chambers to expand into, four to seven percent of the volume of the concrete. Without them the expansion has nowhere to go and it pushes the top layer off, which is why old treads go rounded and crumbly at the edge rather than simply cracking. Air-entrained concrete carries billions of microscopic air cells per cubic foot. Those air pockets relieve internal pressure on the concrete by providing tiny chambers for water to expand into when it freezes. The amount of entrained air is usually between 4 and 7 percent of the volume of the concrete, and it is produced either with air-entraining portland cement or by introducing air-entraining agents.
